All About Cavities

It seems that cavities are the hot topic on the Susquehanna Dental Arts blog! Our previous article on 10 cavity signs and symptoms has generated quite a buzz, and has led to dozens of follow up questions from patients and other readers.

We thought we’d answer a few of the most frequently asked questions about cavities, for your reading pleasure. Of course, if you have a question and don’t see it answered on the list below, feel free to give us a call at 717-285-7033 and we’ll be happy to discuss any remaining questions you might have.

What are cavity signs & symptoms?

There are several warning signs that you may have a cavity. These include white, chalky, or opaque spots on your teeth, highly sensitive teeth or outright toothache, dark spots, and swelling of your gums.

Can a cavity heal on its own? Do cavities get worse if they’re untreated?

Not having a cavity taken care of by the dentist means it will get worse. Even if there is no pain now, it’s important to get treatment before pain inevitably arrives.

How much does it cost to fill a cavity?

Every situation is different because not only are everyone’s teeth unique, but because their dental history and other relevant factors can vary as well. Once you are seen by the dentist here at Susquehanna Dental Arts, we’ll be able to give you an accurate price, but generally anterior fillings (anterior means teeth near the front of the mouth) range between $128 and $170, and posterior fillings are in the $146-$390 range.

Does getting a cavity filled hurt?

Most patients will tell you the untreated cavity is worse than the treatment. Since filling a cavity occurs in the area of the tooth where there are no nerves, you won’t feel any pain. If you have sensitive teeth or need a deeper filling that gets closer to a nerve, a local anesthesia is used to numb the tooth.

How long does a filling take?

A filling is a quick dental procedure. The longest part is waiting for the anesthesia to kick in. The entire procedure will be completed in less than 30 minutes, and you can be on your way, pain free!

Do you offer payment plans for fillings?

We’re happy to offer low and no interest payment plans through CareCredit. Learn more or apply through our payments accepted page.
