Happy New Year! It’s time to get serious – have you ever scheduled a regular hygiene visit with your dentist only to cancel at the last minute, thinking “it’s only a cleaning – it’s not important” or “I don’t feel like going in for a cleaning today, I’m sure it’s fine if I skip”?
At Susquehanna Dental Arts, we’re here to set the record straight. Regular hygiene visits are not only recommended – they’re crucial to your overall health and wellbeing! Today, we want to go through a few of the many important facets of a “regular hygiene” visit and explain how yes, it’s MUCH more than just a cleaning!
Oral Cancer Screening
Each hygiene visit, your dentist will perform a general oral cancer screening to be sure there are no visible signs of cancerous or precancerous conditions in your mouth. Abnormalities such as bumps, lesions, or discoloration anywhere in the mouth can be cause for concern, so it’s important to visit your dentist regularly to closely monitor any changes that may be occurring without you even noticing.
At Susquehanna Dental Arts, we can take an oral cancer screening one step further with our VELscope Enhanced Oral Assessment System, a handheld scope used to detect oral tissue abnormalities that aren’t visible to the naked eye.
New Cavity Detection
Many people assume that they’ll know if a new cavity forms in their tooth. However, a brand-new cavity may cause very little discomfort, or even none at all. However, it is extremely important to catch a cavity early in its formation; the longer the cavity remains open, the more susceptible you become to infection and possibly requiring the tooth to be removed.
Existing Filling Examination
At each regular hygiene visit, your dentist will also examine any existing fillings you may have to ensure that they aren’t coming loose or allowing deposits to build up underneath the surface. If we find any loose or damaged fillings, we’re sure to secure them to avoid potential problems down the road.
Removal of Hardened Bacterial Deposits
Over time, leftover food and other particulates can build up to become hardened deposits called tartar. Tartar stays at the gumline and can potentially weaken your gums and cause disease to run rampant if it is not properly removed. Your regular hygiene visit will include tartar removal, which will help prevent gum sensitivity and disease between visits.
These are just a few of the services that we offer during every routine hygiene visit – making each visit anything but routine!
