How Long Do Dental Crowns Last?

Dental crowns help protect damaged teeth and restore your smile, but since they cost more than fillings and other traditional dental procedures, you might be wondering how long do dental crowns last?

Dental crowns typically last from 5 years to more than 25 years, depending on the materials used to make them and how well you care for them.

At Susquehanna Dental Arts, we provide our customers with zirconia crowns, which rank among the most durable crowns available. These are second only to gold crowns for longevity. (If a customer requests a gold crown, we will gladly provide one. However, the cost for gold crowns can be prohibitive.)

There are also temporary crowns, which only last a few weeks and are not meant as a permanent solution. Read further to learn about other materials used to make dental crowns, durability, and different types of crowns.

If you suspect you may need a dental crown, or are experiencing any tooth sensitivity, we encourage you to call us and schedule a consultation. All our oral health services, from cosmetic dentistry techniques to gum cleaning, use up-to-date sterilization techniques and strict infection control.

If you’re anxious about visiting a dentist, know that we understand. Read these tips in, “How Common Is Fear of The Dentist and Can I Get Rid of My Fear?” and give us a call with any concerns or questions.

What Materials are Used for Dental Crowns?

We’ve already mentioned zirconia and gold, both known for having a long lifespan.

Dental crowns made with porcelain last about 5 years. A person with metal allergies might opt for porcelain crowns. Porcelain crowns look quite natural but are low on the durability spectrum.  Sometimes porcelain is fused to metal to create a crown. A porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crown can last for decades, but their aesthetic is less than desirable as a grey line may be visible at the gumline.

Some dentists will use resin as an alternative to porcelain. Resin crowns are less costly than others, but resin crowns are more likely to break. In the long run, these could end up costing more than other types.

We choose to use zirconia or gold due to their longevity and, in the end, they are a better investment for our patients while producing aesthetically pleasing results.

How Much Does a Dental Crown Cost?

The cost of a dental crown will vary, depending on which materials are used and how complex the process is to get a proper fit and adherence. In some cases, minor gum surgery may be necessary to get a better bond and/or create a better appearance.

On average, a gold crown will cost up to $2500. A zirconia crown may cost $800-$2,500. All-porcelain crowns may cost $800-$3,000. PFM crowns cost the least, typically cost $600-$1,400.

Will Insurance Cover My Dental Crown?

There are many different dental insurance plans. Some plans only cover preventative care while others offer full coverage. Full coverage plans often cover the cost of restorative and orthodontic treatments. Of course, deductibles vary as well. We encourage you to speak with your insurance policy representative and can provide your carrier with the necessary information when needed.

It’s always a relief to know whether an insurance plan covers our dental services. We accept most dental insurance plans, as well as MasterCard, Visa, American Express, Discover, and offer low and no-interest payment plans through CareCredit, a healthcare credit card that helps you pay for treatments and procedures.
