So What Happens at a Dental Checkup?

Chris and two dental patientsA routine dental checkup is vital to keeping your mouth in tip-top shape. Since good oral health contributes to overall health, it’s vital to keep up with your dental care. Unfortunately, some patients are fearful of dentists and only visit us when things go wrong, making it more likely that a procedure will be necessary.

To prevent that, we strongly encourage regular visits. No one can get the mouth as clean as a dentist, and we can spot potential issues before they cause you more pain.

To help put your mind at ease, here’s what to expect at a routine dental checkup at Susquehanna Dental Arts.

  1. Check In – When you visit our office, you’ll check in at the front desk. We may ask you to update your personal information, give us details on any concerns you have, and update your insurance information.
  2. Hygienist Visit – Your hygienist will escort you from the waiting area to one of our private rooms. The hygienist will review your history, ask about any changes to your health or medications, and gather any other information that might help us do a better job. Once all the information is gathered, the hygienist will clean your teeth. This consists of examining the teeth, scraping off plaque and tartar that’s built up, flossing and polishing your teeth, and examining the teeth once again. If you need any x-rays, the hygienist will inform you and they’ll be taken with your consent.
  3. Dentist Visit – Once the hygienist has everything cleaned up and looking its best, the dentist will come in and examine you. The dentist will feel around the outside of your mouth to make sure your bite and jaw are okay, inspect your teeth for issues, tell you the results of the examination, and offer appropriate advice to improve your oral health.
  4. Scheduling – Once the examination is complete, the office will schedule your next dental checkup.

As you can see, a dental checkup isn’t anything to fear! A regular visit schedule, combined with taking care of your teeth at home, can keep your teeth in great shape and prevent problems.
